Skillman Foundation Good Neighborhood Initiative Community Collaboration

Thanks to a Skillman Foundation Good Neighborhoods Initiative Grant, The College for Creative Studies, Mosaic Youth Theatre, African Dance Works, InsideOut Literary Arts Project, Matrix Human Services, Our Children Count, Youth on the Edge… of Greatness, and P.E.E.P.S. are working together to bring the arts to Osborn neighborhood youth.  Classes will be held at The Center, 13560 East McNichols.

 

After-School Arts for Elementary and Middle School Students

Monday through Friday, 4 – 7 pm., October 22 – December 14, 2007

Our Children Count will provide youth support and supervision from 4:00 – 7:00 pm.

High quality art instruction will be provided daily by some of the finest professional youth arts organizations in Detroit 4:30 – 6:30 pm.

     Mondays – African Dance Works; African dance and drumming

     Tue. & Thurs. – Mosaic Youth Theatre; theater workshops (Both days required.)

     Wed. & Fri. – College for Creative Studies; Fine Arts, Design and Crafts 

                             (Students may select one or both days)

Sign up at the Matrix Center, Mon. – Fri. 4 to 7 pm, or by calling Connecting Families (313) 526-4001, ext 10.   Please plan to attend for the entire 8-week session.

Connecting Families also offers tutoring, GED, college prep. and computer classes.  

 

After-School Arts for High School Students

•Wednesdays, 4:30 – 6:30, October – June; Citywide Poets (CWP), InsideOut’s poetry performance workshop.  Youth study with award-winning poets, publish their work and perform at local venues, get to know student poets from other CWP sites around Detroit, and compete for the Brave New Voices Slam in July.  Call InsideOut (313) 965-5332. 

 

Saturday Arts for Middle School Students

Detroit Neighborhood Arts Workshops, Saturdays 10 am – 12:30 pm

Oct. 20, 2007 – May 17, 2008;  This long-term program prepares Middle School Students with a serious interest in the arts and strong family support to apply to Detroit’s quality High School art programs by preparing their personal art portfolio.  In-depth art and design classes will be taught by College for Creative Studies Community Art Instructors. Students must interview to be accepted into this program.   Families can get information by calling Youth on the Edge…of Greatness (313) 267-1119, or CCS (313) 664-7821.

 

Saturday Arts for High School Students

Detroit Neighborhood Arts Corps, Saturdays, 1 – 5 pm, in October

Through this entrepreneurial youth training program conducted in collaboration with the College for Creative Studies (CCS) and P.E.E.P.S (People Enriching Empowering People Services), high school students will engage their community through public art projects such as murals, public sculpture, art events, graphic arts and design.  Students can earn community service hours for high school and college application requirements while having their art in the public eye.  For information, call CCS (313) 664-7821.
